Scenic navigation keeps rerouting my created routes
Quote from sickora on August 23, 2020, 10:55As the title says. It is not every time, but it happens enough and is frustrating. I'll create a route for myself to follow and use navigation for directions. At some point, the navigation directions start to change from what my route is. Today I was following one road for about 35 miles and 20 miles into it Scenic had me turn off, drive some other roads, and get back on. Why does this keep happening? Am I missing a setting?

Quote from Guido on August 24, 2020, 09:28There can be three reasons for this:
1. The route was created with an older version (with older map version) of Scenic. When you select the route for navigation it is recalculated with the maps and routing algorithm of the current version. Usually there is no change in the routing algorithm between version, but I have been doing minor changes between the last 2 versions which could have caused this. I will not make any more changes to this for now.
2. Scenic thinks you deviated from the route. This can sometimes happen even if you are still on route (for example if there is a small deviation in a road location on the map from reality... or the map is not completely up to date. E.g. I've had it happen where a certain highway junction was 'modernised' by the government, moving the roads a little bit, but the map still had the 'old' junction, which resulted in Scenic thinking that I was off route, recalculating to get me back on it.
3. The 'strange loop' was also there when you created the route, but due to zoom levels was hard to detect. In general I recommend to do a final check after creating a route. zoom in quite a bit and then drag the map along the route.Hope this helps/explains. If not or if you have other questions please let me know. Happy to help.
Best regards and ride safe,
Guido

Quote from sickora on August 30, 2020, 07:35Thanks for the reply. I'll definitely check to make sure it wasn't #3. I've had #2 happen a few times, but never enough where I've fallend off the route. Great app, it's made my exploring so much easier.

Quote from windingroad38 on September 23, 2020, 07:54I put my comment below these lines, because I just wanted to start a new thread with exact this question, how to share a route between apps without the problem of having multiple routing-versions due to individual calculating options in each app.
Glad I found this thread before writing and sharing the Link is exactly what I had looked for.
Thank you.

Quote from dasherpr on November 29, 2020, 13:59Hi... I have been using Scenic in Puerto Rico for a while. Generally great, way (way) better than Rever which so many of my BMW club mates use. However, no matter how carefully I plan a route and add via points to the main intersections or ensure I don’t miss anything, in areas with lots of little roads or streets Scenic will often recalculate even though I know I’m on the right road, and send me off on some creative loops. Embarrassing when I have 5 buddies following me! I am going to try the “go back” function instead of automatically figuring out a new route, but it isn’t that I’ve missed a turn; Scenic gets creative even though I haven’t. Frustrating. I guess, like the explanation above, it loses me and then tries to help me. Perhaps you can make this less sensitive?

Quote from Guido on November 29, 2020, 14:16Scenic is indeed sensitive indeed. It could also have to do with inaccurate GPS signal. I can't do anything about this in the short term (as this is being done by the map and routing framework), but in Scenic 3 this will be taken care of, as that will with to a new map and routing provider.

Quote from dasherpr on December 20, 2020, 09:56Guido, yesterday I used Scenic on purpose (even though I knew the route). I planned a ride using Google My Maps and easily had the Scenicapp read it from the link (I LOVE this feature!), and then rode my ride. (Elsewhere, I am reporting on the fact that using Scenic somehow blocks the BMW Connected app from following my ride). Ok. Again, when driving through areas with lots of little secondary roads near each other... Scenic goes crazy. Wants to recalculate, even though I know I'm on the route. Then draws weird loops, even though I carefully went over the Google Maps import and fixed all those. If I were trying out an unexplored route, this would definitely have sent me on all kinds of unwanted detours. I know you know about this; am just underlining how annoying it is.
Thank you for your hard work making it better!

Quote from Guido on December 20, 2020, 11:00I understand this is very annoying. I’m actually not sure why this is happening that much. Would you mind sharing the route with me and, if you remember, indicate where it was rerouting you unnecessarily? Here’s how to create a share link to a route. If you prefer you can send me a direct email through the support link top right (all the way at the bottom).

Quote from dasherpr on December 20, 2020, 11:54Guido, here's the link.
The rerouting was happening between waypoints #9 and #10 the most, if I recall correctly. I know the route, so I just ignored them.

Hope this helps!

Quote from Guido on December 21, 2020, 16:18Hmmm. It's quite strange to be honest. This is probably a combination of two things. Can't be sure, but in any case I'm afraid there's nothing I can do about it.
- The map latitude data is slightly off. In other words, the roads, in reality are more up or down than the map indicates. I'm saying latitude / up or down, since the rerouting occurred mostly when the road was "horizontal".
- The matching of the coordinates to the road is not smart enough. It matches the GPS coordinate to the closest road. In my opinion it should take the route into account too, which is seems it doesn't. With even the slightest deviation from the route and it's on a junction it thinks you are on the other road... starting to reroute you
Sorry that I can't solve this now, but Scenic 3 with the new map provider will solve this entirely.
