The big Phone Mounting topic

Just to share what I’ve been using since Sept 2019 after I discovered the Scenic app. At the time I couldn’t find any reasonably priced wireless charging mounts, but I admit I’m a cheapskate and also enjoy DIY projects, so I made my own. I have an iPhone 8, so no image stabilization issues. I ran this mount on my Vstrom and even transferred it to my DR650 for a 500 mile gravel/off-road ride. The mount held up superbly and kept my phone battery charged up nicely. The only change I’ve made since this video is to extend the wiring from the charging coil to the circuit board and waterproof it better with some adhesive lined heat shrink tubing.

I’ve since created a similar mount that snaps directly to the handlebars of my DR650 and rests atop the handlebar clamps. I’ve been over some very rough terrain and it’s held up well with no issues.

Very nice 🙂

Has anyone had issues with overheating with a wireless charging head?

Since I installed my QuadLock wireless charging head I noticed that sometimes (on longer rides under the Mexican sun) my phone's brightness was less than maximum (it looks like 25% or so), even though the brightness slider in the control panel showed at 100%. Pretty hard to see anything on the screen at 25% in full sunlight.

I've since then learned that this is a built in protection against overheating of the iPhone. Also, it happened to me once that the phone overheated entirely upon which this screen shows:

No harm done, but had to wait a while and restart phone.

I never had this problem with the quad lock before installing the wireless charging head. I knew that wireless charging heads create some heat simply due to the way they work, but I guess in combination with direct sunlight and a energy intensive navigation app running, it can become a problem.

I think I'm going to remove the wireless charging head because of this.

With the overheating I have found that the amount of power the charger puts out has a lot to do with heat.  To Keep heat down you want a charger that only puts enough to charge your phone slightly.  ie a faster charge heats up phone.  I have a 2.1A in the wife's car and that will heat up my phone, but in installed one under my dash and I run gps and music and it only gets warm.  I can't remember size of the unit but I would guess .75 to 1 amp charge.

This doesn't qualify as a big phone, but it is an iPad mini.  It's a RAM mount that I put onto my 2021 Harley Davidson Road King.  I like basic bikes with minimal solid fairing, so I really liked the Road King's clear fairing.  Most modern touring bikes come with touch screens now, but I thought the iPad mini was a far superior option for all of the reasons why.  This one is the cell version which also comes with a built-in GPS.  The screen real estate is more than generous, but it's also very discrete.

There is a longer arm available for the RAM mount, but it's on backorder.  I will probably order it to center this a little better between the handlebars.  I haven't road tested it yet, but probably will in a couple of days.  I have a short USB-A to Lightning cord that will connect nicely to it to keep it powered.

It will play my music through Bluetooth and Scenic of course.  I won't be able to make phone calls, but I really hate doing that on the bike anyway.

I'm a big fan of Quadlock but found the handlebar bracket stood my phone off centre and too high once I added the dampner and wireless charging head, so I drilled and tapped a thread into the top mount and it fits perfectly.

I used the desktop wireless charger and some modified GoPro parts to make a bracket for my car.

@lez90 Looks great. For the bike mounting… did you drill a hole in your handlebars?

No,  just the alloy cap.  it's quite thick and allowed the entire bolt that came with the quad lock to fit.

Great thread. I use a Tackform Enduro series metal mount to the bars of my Royal Enfield Interceptor. I have a USB charger mounted, and run an older iPhone 6 on iOS 12 running Scenic. I don't have to worry about vibration killing the camera with this older phone, and I keep my iPhone XS in my jacket pocket. I will eventually buy a used iPhone 8 so I can run newer iOS versions and newer Scenic versions.

Apple has officially posted warnings about iPhones and motorcycle handlebar mounts - vibrations can damage the camera

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212803

The "Genius" at my local Apple Store said handle bar mounts were the real issue but Apple chose mention the chassis too so that mounting other places or on other types of high powered vehicles (ATVs, ect) could also considered if a warranty claim is being submitted.

He also said that camera failure may not be covered under warranty claim if they know the phone was mounted on a motorcycle, especially the handlebars.

Suspect android phones have the same consideration.

Having a 2018 Goldwing, I mount my phone in a vibration reducing holder in the center pocket and plug the phone into the bike so Apple Car Play can be used.   Scenic 3 needs to get here soonest....

I had my camera damaged two times with my iPhone XR (first time I didn’t know it was motorcycle mounting related…assumed it was a one off production error so continued to use mount that I had). Luckily  Apple replaced the camera under warranty, but this was before they issued this warning. I imagine they won’t be this flexible anymore since they issued this warning.

I have used the Quad Lock vibration dampener since then. With my iPhone XR, and with my new iPhone 12 Pro, on 3 different motorcycles. No more damage.

Carplay support is coming before next motorcycle season (in northern hemisphere).

Sorry, but what has Scenic to do with hardware problems?

Quadlock and other companies have changed their mounting hardware and added special parts to reduce the vibrations.

The problem is the Cellphone with their integrated sensors such as vibration compensation and auto focus. The more sensors these cellphones have, the more sensitive it is.

since I had two damages on my iPhone 11 Pro I also bought this dampener part from quadlock and had no new camera issue since then.

For that, there is no difference between Scenic 2 and 3. You can’t blame software for hardware malfunctioning.

Hi Tom

<You can’t blame software for hardware malfunctioning.>  No one is blaming Scenic or software.

Posted for awareness for folks who are making choices for mounts because:

1) This is a thread about cell phone mounts.

2) Scenic app is on cell phones.

3) Motorcycle riders mount their cell phones on motorcycle handlebars or chassis.

4) Motorcycle vibrations appear to be outside of current cell phone design considerations - thus not a malfunction. We use cell phones in a way not intended by the designers.

5) Replacing a damaged phone can be expensive

6) Informed choices are empowering

Hope that helps!

Talked to an actual Apple engineer friend of mine about this issue, long before Apple posted the official warning, who says it's a very complex problem that has a little to do with the sensor, a little to do with the image processing "chip"  (it's not really a chip per se), and a little to do with the optical image stabilization (OIS) in the camera hardware. In other words, not an easy fix. It's also not an instant fail - damage accumulates over time and eventually the hardware/software can no longer compensate.

Even with Quadlock and vibration dampers giving good results for many like Guido, I don't think I will trust a new-ish $1000 phone to a handlebar mount. So I'm sticking with the cheapest phone that will run the most recent iOS (which is why I'm going to have to find a used iPhone 7 when Scenic 3 arrives) and keeping the "real" phone in my pocket. I may even try to find a phone with an already-damaged camera  on local CL so I can get a great deal and not have to worry about the vibration at all.

I had an iPhone 7 Plus for almost 20'000km, an iPhone 11 Pro max for 16'000km and an iPhone XR for 4000km on different motorcycles as well as on the mountain bike. Approximately half of the distance was done with SP-Connect holder with the add-on vibration damper. For the other half of the total distance I used the RamMount X-Grip, which probably eliminates vibrations even better than SP-Connect (gut feeling, but I can not prove that).

So far I had no issues with the iPhone cameras or any other damages. Actually I'm impressed by the ruggedness of the phones as I'm only using the SP-Connect sleeve without any rain-cover. E.g. today I was on the mountainbike for a 3 hours single trial track in pouring rain. Me, the bike and the iPhone were completely soaked and full of mud, but the phone did not stop working. One (for me) minor issue happened last year during a 6 hours rain storm in the Dolomites. The iPhone 11 stopped charging (via cable) and complained about a wet connector. Nevertheless, the phone continued to work on battery for the remaining 2 hours. A hair dryer quickly fixed the issue later on.

By the way,  since last year I'm using the SP-Connect wireless charger on the motorbikes. It works pretty well, although sometimes it is just able to keep the battery level, but not really charge the phone, which obviously depends on what kind of apps are running in the background.

I'm now looking forward to get the sleeve for the iPhone 13 and hope the good experience will continue.

Great video review, thanks for producing it. While I never damaged one of my iPhones (with or without using the vibration dampener of SP-Connect), some of my friends suffered. One of the differentiators is that I only own 2 cylinder or single cylinder bikes. All friends who experienced phone respectively camera damages were on 3 or 4 cylinder bikes. I would assume that higher vibration frequencies might be the issue. What I also experienced so far is that heavy hits and low frequency vibrations as they happen on Mountainbike or on Enduro (single cylinder bikes) trips do not damage the phones. At least myself and all friends I asked can not report any related issues.

It would be interesting to learn which bike, phone and holder combinations cause the least issues. Does anyone know if this kind of information is collected somewhere?

Well,

it's done. I mounted it without the knuckle adapter an it looks well. Already had a small ride and there wasn't any vibration I could feel.

Wireless charger is conntected to the ignition, so I can't forget to switch off the charger.

There ist one thing that disturbes me. When I mounted the case to my iPhone the display protection was lifted at the edges, because the case is so tight around the corners. First I thought I didn't put on the protection glass exactly in the middle. Then I used another glass and it was the same. The corners were lifted by the case. So I ruined two glasses now.

Guido, are you using any protection on your 12 pro display? If yes, what kind? I guess I have to look for a protection glass which is slightly smaller on the egdes.

If you are in the USA, try the dollar tree store, they sell amazing temperate glass for the iPhone, only cost $1 and it is a bit smaller, so it might be just what you need. Give them a try.

Hi Bohemio,

thanks, but I found a protection glass in the meantime which is slightliy smaller and works perfect with the quad lock phone case.

Good info on the iphone camera issues.  Thanks all for posting that.

I do the same as atx_re_rider and picked up an iPhone se to use as a gps.  "real" phone is stored safely away.

I wanted a very low profile mount on my bike and found one made by Gub.  No vibration protection.
