INTRODUCTION

Dear motorcycle enthusiasts,

I am writing to you from the European Capital of Culture 2018, beautiful Leeuwarden Friesland, the Netherlands, where I was born and raised. Due to the bad weather I don’t see many bikes out here. It rains a little bit every day it seems, and therefore it is not ideal for riding.

In this week’s Moto Intel Report Guido will share a ride report about the famous B500 in Germany, discuss our vulnerability on the road, give us the top 10 motorcycle fashion crimes and present some important news regarding the Motomappers App Scenic 2. Tom will follow up on his search for new tires and will recommend some basic tools for maintenance, while I will talk about an awesome and affordable new BMW.

Now, without further ado, let’s get rolling…

EPIC ROUTES

Schwarszwaldhochstrasse / B500 – Germany

The B500 is one of the most famous and most popular biking roads in Europe. With its long fast sweeping bends and fantastic German engineering, this is a road not to be missed. This is a fast winding route, with good visibility and beautiful scenery, that takes you from Baden Baden through the heart of the Black Forest. The Hochstraße runs at an altitude of between 800 and 1000 metres. It has many hotels along the way, so take your time, enjoy the scenery and spend a night in one of the most beautiful regions of Germany. This video is not a motorcycle video, but it gives a great birds eye view, while this second video will get your motorcycle adrenaline pumping. Enjoy 🙂

Motorcycles

2018 BMW R Nite T Pure

With a base price of $11,995 this 110hp bike comes a lot cheaper than its brethren, and it seems to be worth every penny. The horizontally-opposed twin engine sounds the way it looks: pure 70s and 80s BMW and the overall feel is also typical German quality. Although the Pure comes with alloy wheels, for only $500 you can get cross spoke wheels. Read more here at popularmechanics.

MOTORCYCLE MAINTENANCE

Tire Pressure

I got some great feedback from our readers last week when I wrote about replacing the tires on my 2017 KTM 1090 Adventure R. Thanks Jeff, Steve, Mark and Ken for your advice – it’s much appreciated.

This week, I’d like to find out how much you can get out of your tires, using the right kind of tire pressure. Tire pressure is essential to the handling, thread wear, comfort and stability of your motorcycle. While measuring tire pressure is a boring job, it’s quite essential to do this every couple of weeks. The only thing you need is a decent tire gauge – down here in Mexico, they only use pencil gauges at the gas stations and they’re rubbish. Something like this should do the trick.

Remember to always measure tire pressure when the tires are cold, and check your bike’s owner’s manual for optimal tire pressure – I like my tires high-pressure as I almost daily ride with a passenger.

Do you check your tire pressure often enough? How many PSI is the sweet spot?

MOTORCYCLE SAFETY

What’s the biggest cause of motorcycle accidents?

Images like this and stories about motorcycle accidents always turn my stomach. Very recently Tom, Jasper and me were reminded again of how vulnerable we are on a motorcycle. The daughter of our regular motorcycle mechanic was in a motorcycle accident. She was riding pillion and survived with minor injuries, but sadly her boyfriend did not. Our heart goes out to her, the families and everyone involved.
Have you or someone close ever been in a motorcycle accident? If so, what caused it? Please help us find out the most common cause and fill out this one question survey! It would mean a lot to us.

MOTORCYCLE GADGETS

Basic Tools

Many of us bring our motorcycles to the garage for basic service, but many of my friends are avid DIY’ers. There are thousands of different tools out there, but some of the most reliable and sturdy stuff I’ve been working with is from a Swedish brand called Teng Tools. A regular wrench and socket set will set you back at least one hundred dollars, but if you want to make a good one-time investment, I recommend a tool set like this one.

10 crimes against motorcycle fashion

I recently came across this rather old article and found it quite entertaining. All of these motorcycle fashion ‘crimes’ are still true today and my guess is that many of you will recognise them. With a small risk of provoking reactions and opening the response floodgate, I give you the 10 crimes against motorcycle fashion. If you recognize yourself, remember, this is all in good motorcycle fun :).

SCENIC NEWS

Scenic 2 – What about your Scenic 1 purchases?

Scenic 2 is a big update to the current version, Scenic 1. Once available, Scenic will simply update through the app store like any other update. It will feel like another app though. The design is completely different, new features are added and improvements are made. Purchases done in the current Scenic version will remain usable in Scenic 2. I might change pricing and the premium/credits model a bit for Scenic 2, but I will make sure existing purchases will keep their value or get more value in Scenic 2.

PIC OF THE WEEK

Stelvio / Stilfser Joch

Many great pictures were submitted this time, making it more difficult than usual to choose a ‘winner’. Unfortunately ‘there can be only one’; This picture was taken by Richard at the top of Stelvio at 2758m. Here are all pics we received, trust me, it’s worth a look.

What’s your most beautiful / funny / crazy motorcycle shot? Share your pic with us and we might just put it in the next Moto Intel Report.

Please, please make an Android App for Scenic. I know a dozen riders just in my area that want it.

    • Guido says:

I’m afraid an Android version is going to be a while. I’m currently focusing on a big update for iOS. After that I will point my attention to Android again.

If you’d like to stay informed have a look here: http://www.motomappers.com/faqs/faqs.php#android

Hope this explains. If not, please let me know.
      Cheers,
      Guido
