scenic does not always use the track I created

Hi,

just recently started using Scenic.

My aim is to first create detailed trips on pc, then use Scenic to guide me.

I want to follow the track, but if I deviate from it, I would hope that Scenic calculates the route back to the track, but not back to the trackpoint where I left the track, because most probably I had a good reason for deviating (like works blocking a road). It should route me back to a trackpoint further up the route, and if this is not possible (I can understand that Scenic doesn't know where exactly the works stop), then if I succeed myself to put myself back on the track (eg simply by following deviation signs on the road), then Scenic should continue guiding me.

Two methods

  • create waypoints and export as route : here what I see is that Scenic creates different routes, not the route that I had hoped to be riding. Also if I deviate from the route, it keeps on trying to get me back to the location where I left the route.
  • export as gpx : here Scenic seems is deviating from the original track while importing

Here an example, I used gpx binder here to visualize the track

It shows there's enough trackpoints

Here's the result in Scenic after importing:

what's the reason for this deviation ?

thanks,

Johan

Hi Johan

I cannot answer your track issue but I think I can give you my experience of importing GPX routes and getting Scenic to match the route. The problem with routes is the way the software algorithm calculates the direction of travel between two waypoints. When you import a route from your PC you are basically importing a set of waypoints and Scenic builds the route from these. If the building algorithm between PC and Scenic are different then you will get different results. On top of that the map data between PC and Scenic may be different too. Also what you set in Scenic as routing preference (fast, short, efficient curvy) will effect the result as well. So whats the answer. The only answer that I have come up with is that when planning the route on your PC you use sufficient waypoints to force the route the way you want to go. Pay particular attention if there is more than one way to go between waypoints. If this is the case then force the route to go how you want it to by placement of waypoints. In your example (bottom pic) I cannot see if there is a road under the straight blue dotted line but I presume there is. If so there are three possible routing solutions on the map. Here you need waypoints to force the route. If there are any ambiguities in the way a route can go then waypoint it. I've been using Kurvger.de to plan my routes and set 'efficient' route preference in Scenic. Kurvger planner has a nice feature that when you add waypoints it automatically re-orders then for you. You can also set Kurvger to OpenStreetMaps which I believe is the same as Scenic. Hope this helps a little.

Hi Johan,

I can concur on what Peter is saying. Regarding the import deviation, have a look here for more information on why this can happen end how to resolve it: https://scenic.app/knowledge-base/strange-loops-while-importing/

For the detour behaviour... have a look in Settings > Navigation & Tracking. There are two settings important for this: ‘detour behaviour’ and ‘via point pro mode’. How you set this determines how Scenic handles detours. There is a detailed description there, but if you need more info I’m happy to help further.

cheers,
Guido

If you're enjoying Scenic and are happy with the support, please leave a nice rating in the App Store. It would mean a lot to me ❤️
