Loops and via points

This is a brilliant app.  But I think I've got a couple of new observations on unexpected loops and via points.

Yesterday I used scenic to plan a 50 mile route.  Not an import.  I got to a little village called South Witham and it told me to turn left at a T junction.  That was unexpected.  I should have realised something was wrong as the map display actually showed the green line going off from the T junction in both directions...

So I did as I was told and found myself riding round little country roads in a loop, back to the same T junction!  Then it let me go the other way.

No matter, it was very - er - scenic and I wasn't in a hurry.

Afterwards, examining the route and its via points, Scenic had inserted a via point just the wrong side of the T junction.  Literally feet the wrong side, but enough to trigger a loop.  I deleted the via point and the loop disappeared.

I should have checked the route map more carefully before I set off, I guess.

Second was bizarre.  Approaching a roundabout, the voice instruction said 'Take the sixth exit'.  The roundabout didn't have six exits.  The map showed the green line going all the way round the roundabout and off at the second exit.

That time I knew to ignore the voice instruction!

PS This is NOT a complaint, just posting out of interest.  The app is brilliant, and importing routes from Kurviger works a dream!

Hi there,

I recognize your points. Was this a curvy generated route by any chance? If so that’s probably the reason for these little loops (the roundabout also being a slightly misplaced via point I believe).

You see, generating a curvy route, in essence, is also an import in the background. What this does is ask Kurviger to generate a curvy route between the points you placed on the map. Kurviger then sends back a list of coordinates along the route it generated and Scenic then feeds those points to its routing algorithm. Slight misplacement of those points can cause these loops.

This is an error (or rather over sensitivity / not smart enough) coordinate matching algorithm. This algorithm matches raw coordinates to roads and road halves. In essence it’s not smart enough. It seems it only looks at one coordinate one by one, not taking into account the rest of the route.

For Scenic 3 (next mc season) I’m switching to a new map provider which does not have this problem. Meanwhile the only thing you can do is to really check the route in detail during creation / import and slightly move (or remove) via points

Hope this explains? If not please let me know.

All the best,

guido

If you're enjoying Scenic and are happy with the support, please leave a nice rating in the App Store. It would mean a lot to me ❤️

Exactly right;  I had asked Scenic to generate  a curvy route.

Not a problem, in my opinion, as long as you know it can happen; so check your curvy route for loops before you set off rather than after (which was my mistake!)
