iPhone 11 GPS issues

Hi, it looks like iPhone 11 has some GPS issues causing the location to be incorrect and just disappear occasionally, well frequently.  This naturally causes the app to ask if I would like to re-calculate the route /skip waypoints and once GPS location is back the map, frozen to the old location, jumps to the right place.

What I have googled this is iOS13 or iPhone 11 issue and just curious if user here have suggestions how to minimize the impact to the navigation? Love Scenic and have been using it for a long time but last 4 days touring in Luxembourg/Germany I missed a lot of turns while the GPS was having a fit.

I only found out later when got home that I can reduce the time for the notices while riding. Any other suggestions? Need to now head out this week to see if this helps...

This is also impacting other apps and gives interesting results on that stats. My max speed was apparently 252km/h 🙂

This sounds like it actually could be a hardware issue. If it was iPhone 11 / iOS 13 related I think I would have gotten more feedback on it.

Here’s a thread of a someone with similar issue with iPhone X: https://scenic.app/forum/topic/gps-problemen-bij-iphone-x/?part=1#postid-704 This topic is in Dutch but perhaps google translate can help out

additionally I myself had these problems about two years ago with my iPhone 6. Symptoms were that I would get the bad GPS signal quite a lot, location would not be precise, and be static (not moving) while I was actually moving. This happened when being outside with good GPS reception. This happened with Scenic but also with other gps apps like Waze and google maps. Also Bluetooth connections were very unstable. I needed to be very close (1 meter) to get good Bluetooth connection, otherwise connection would get interrupted and device (e.g. Bluetooth speaker) would disconnect.

Bluetooth and WiFi are regulated by the same component in an iPhone 6 (perhaps also on 11, don’t know). When I replaced that component the problems were gone. Here’s a thread on the iFixit forum about this specific iPhone 6 problem: https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/267135/GPS+&+Bluetooth+work+sporadically. (Check out chosen solution... I actually replaced this component and no more problem after that. )

It seems that iPhones sometimes have these problems because of the battery saving. iOS tries to stop processes that are using a lot of battery like GPS.

I’m curious if there was a definitive solution to these issues discovered? I love the app, but the struggles with GPS staying connected and tracking properly has become so much of a problem I will be forced to no longer use it.

I do not feel there is a hardware issue with my brand new iPhone 11, that runs every other GPS app flawlessly.

Hi Bryan,

If you do not have these or similar problems with other navigation apps then it's not likely to be a hardware issue in your case. There is one known GPS issue: where the current position (and sometimes the instructions) are delayed. Is that perhaps what you're referring too? If so, this will be resolved in Scenic 3, with the new map provider. Here's the support article on that: https://scenic.app/knowledge-base/current-position-lagging-behind/

Other then that I'm not aware of any structural problems with GPS reception. If you're experiencing any other symptoms then mentioned above please let me know. Happy to help if I can.

Cheers,
Guido

Thank you for the reply!

It does happen where my current position isn’t updated. I do also receive a messages about GPS interruptions. After a moment, it will snap back to current position. (Sometimes too late)
These interruptions caused me much trouble navigating my last two adventures. Yesterday I was completely off route and it didn’t go well.

I have hopes that Scenic 3 fixes my issues because I love the app and want to continue using it. When will version 3 become available?

thank you!

It sounds like it's more than just the current position delay. The delay can be s few seconds, but not that you can get completely off route. So other navigation apps, under the same circumstances, do not show strange GPS behaviour?

Well, the Apple and Google navigation apps do not have issues like this. But I have not tested other GPS apps under the same conditions on this specific new phone.
Would the Apple and Google apps be using the same technology or should I test with another GPS app different from those?

They would also show problems. To be 100% sure you could give Waze a try. That’s the one I experienced problems with too when I had the hardware issue on my iPhone 6.

I have Waze and I will give it a go! I will post back once I’ve tested it.

Thank you!

Hi,

I never got to finish up testing this problem properly.  I took the phone camera to be replaced, vibration issue, and while they fixed that they broke something else and I got a new phone. With the new phone no more GPS issues so feels very much like a hardware issue. Also tested other apps and had some issues with Waze etc. but not as much as with the Scenic.

When I took the camera to be fixed I tried to ask what can they do with the GPS but never got answer back from the Apple service if they can check or how I can check if the GPS is buggered. I did do all referenced problem solving items like reset on locations services etc but the GPs issues didn't get fixed.

Oh my. Thanks for the reply!

the phone I have now is new because I had the vibration problem with my cam on the last phone. I’m worried that my issue may end up being hardware. I’ll test more ASAP.

Thanks for taking the time to reply!
