Importing from Furkot - Single best feature

First, I was a beta user of Scenic 1, and have the lifetime sub and purchased all of NA maps.  But the one thing that got me to Scenic, and keeps me on Scenic, is the ability to create my routes on Furkot and directly import them into Scenic.  This is the single most important feature for me.  I hate creating on one, converting to the right format of GPX just to import into another.

Now, I dont have any current examples saved (I will do better) but I will say that there have been some issues with the import, where it will take me down the wrong street and tell me to take a Uturn to get back to the route.  Or, it will go a different route for part than what I selected.

Yes, I do go in and fix these things before hitting the road, but I wish it didnt happen as often as it does.  But here's the thing, it is a lot easier to fix than to go through the export/import I used to use.

If you are using Scenic, and not using Furkot, you are missing a big tool for route planning.

Can only agree on Furkot. It's a great route planning tool! Bit of a steep learning curve but that's only because it has such a vast feature set.

Regarding the import... yes please send me an example once you have it. I'm afraid though (will have to see for sure with an example) that it's a routing engine issue, snapping the coordinates to the 'wrong' road half. That snapping is also done by routing engine and that's from a 3rd party. It needs to be more intelligent I agree, but so far my request to provider have not been honoured regarding this.

For more details also see here: https://scenic.app/knowledge-base/strange-loops-while-importing/

If you're enjoying Scenic and are happy with the support, please leave a nice rating in the App Store. It would mean a lot to me ❤️

I do have a trip coming up n May where I need to route 3 days worth of loops.  I am tweaking them now, but here are the furkot links.  I havent tried importing those yet as I am still micromanaging them and verifying the streets.  The first one is nearly the same as one I did last year which had some of the incorrect loops.  I make sure to have my points on the correct side and not placed off the road.  I zoom down as close as Furkot will let me.

Again, I will always verify the route after importing.  There are enough distractions beyond worrying about a route once underway.

Guido's already on here and of course as the developer has a vast wealth of knowledge beyond me. But I've been using Furkot along with Scenic for about three years, so just wanted to chime in.

I've mapped in Furkot (and in other apps like RouteYou) and imported to Scenic a ton of times over those three years...countless loops and routes. While I have had the occasional mishap where it'll take me down the wrong road, I can honestly say it doesn't happen often, and certainly not as often as you mention it happens to you. I can't imagine why. I create routes in the SE like you: in GA, NC (Tail Of The Dragon, etc), KY, and beyond.

I'll be curious to see if you can provide Guido an example. I'm just a curious user here and apologize that I can't add much to the conversation. You seem to be doing all the right things: zooming into Furkot as far as you can to be sure you've properly dropped the waypoint, checking the route once imported in Scenic, etc. Those two points alone would be my guess as to why you've had errors. But yeah, seriously, I've routed and used Furkot/Scenic over a few thousand miles and while I can recall a couple of blips and mishaps, they're few and far between. Curious to see what shakes out here.

Ok. Took a look (only at the first link (tail of dragon) you sent). When I open it in Scenic I get two discrepancies indeed. (See screenshots)

They are easy to spot and easy to correct in Scenic, but nevertheless I understand your point.

I’ve looked at how you planned it in Furkot and can’t see anything that I would do differently.

The discrepancies occur in the first place by Scenic’s routing provider unintelligently snapping waypoints to (the wrong) roads at junctions (like mentioned above)

Scenic tries to auto-correct this through an algorithm I developed, that moves the via points a bit along the calculated route. In most cases that works, but in these two cases it actually makes it worse. I’m going to have another look at the algorithm to see if I can improve it for these cases.

Great if you could do this Guido.  I do a lot of importing from Furkot and have noticed this problem too.

For those of you in the beta test, could you give Furkot import a try with version 2.2.5? I made some changes. For the two routes above it got better. Still not perfect (will never be perfect) but quite a bit better at least for these routes.

Testing 2.2.5 with a Furkot export.  I think it's better but still I have to eval each Imported route for misplaced route-points.  Fortunately, the Auto-correct seems to work pretty well also - given that I have 80+ route-days to Import for this upcoming tour. :-))

I haven't done any planning since last summer, but I've been looking to an alternative to Basecamp and the Harley Davidson Ride Planner (no longer a member of HOG so not available to me).

Google maps are ok, but I've been looking for something better.   I've read many reviews on how Furkot is difficult to master, but after reading these posts I'll sign up.
