Gravel road
Quote from shwiggs on 15.08.2020, 19:52scenic keeps sending me down gravel roads, even if I have avoid gravel roads selected. Used scenic this weekend in southern Minnesota and twice it tried to have me take a gravel road. Does anybody else have this problem? As of right now I feel I can’t trust the app to generate a trustworthy route for me to take. Is there something I’m doing wrong? How can I fix this problem?

Quote from Jayzeable on 17.08.2020, 02:17I also have this problem. Although, the gravel road is very near to where I live, so spotted it prior to the start of my ride.
The entrance to this road is tarmac, as you turn off a 'B' road here in the Uk. You then hit the old tarmac, before eventually turning to gravel which is heavy with very deep potholes, and very uneven suited to 4x4's. My car would not drive over this part it's so bad.
The road near me is an access road only and serves some residential properties. This road should not be used as a shortcut and is signposted as such. Coming from the other side, the road serves industrial access and the road before turning to gravel on the link between.

Quote from Guido on 17.08.2020, 10:00I'm afraid this is due to the data in Scenic's (or rather Kurviger's) maps. They are both based on Open Street Map. Open Street Map is usually and in most areas very good, but in some areas (and especially the 'less travelled' roads, it doesn't know what kind/type of road it is and then assumes paved. I'm switching Scenic to another proprietary map provider for next motorcycle season, which should solve most of these problems.

What's the status here? I live in Germany and scenic keeps using roads prohibited for motorcycles - which is a major pain and really a show stopper to continue paying for extras.

Quote from miudode on 22.02.2021, 23:52Hi Guido, please note that I‘m not of the same opinion. These Gravel Roads in Germany are not allowed for motorcycles, but they are allowed for Mountainbiking or biking, what is the intent of Scenic as well. I do both using Scenic, around 70% Motorbiking and 30% biking. So, I disagree the gravel roads shall be removed from Scenic. Also, at the entrance of this „not allowed“ gravel roads there are signs / indications that motorized vehicles are not allowed. Thanks

Quote from Guido on 23.02.2021, 05:23I understand. No worries. The new map provider will still have the gravel roads, but in the routing options there will be a setting to avoid unpaved roads. So you can choose.
but please remember that Scenic is for motorized vehicles first and foremost. The routing is for motorized vehicles, so it will always avoid the roads where motorized vehicles are not allowed to go. I might be adding a bicycle routing in the future though, but that will be a little while.

Quote from Cecil on 24.05.2021, 08:28Hello Guido / All,
I continue to experience this same issue with Scenic when letting it come up with routes. I have avoid unpaved checked. Albeit I don't seem to be able to find that option in the app at the moment. Anyway, nearly without fail when planning routes into central PA, Virginia, North Carolina, etc... I get taken down a fire road of some kind.
It happened again yesterday when taking a route around the Lockhaven, PA area. A road called "White Deer Pike" or "Sugar Valley Narrows Road" is a potholed, gravel fire road. Are we on v3 of the app yet?
Also, it would be a great feature (I'll post in the appropriate section) to include a thumbs up / down icon on the nav screen. If the thumbs down is checked between two waypoints, Scenic never routes through there again, unless the mark is removed. Similar with thumbs up, Scenic always routes you through that section when possible. Perhaps this is an alternative fix to the dirt road issue. At least the app won't get you twice on the same road. 😉

Quote from Guido on 24.05.2021, 10:12I understand. I really do. It can be very annoying if the nav sends you a way your bike can't go, having to turn around, loosing precious time. Especially if a bunch of riders is following you.
I'm working hard to get Scenic 3 out there as quick as possible. It's aimed for summer. https://scenic.app/knowledge-base/scenic-3-info/
Just to make sure, I want to check how the new map provider classifies the roads we are talking about. Would you mind sending me some screenshots of the roads in question, with a small explanation how/where I can find them (nearby towns, street names if possible)? I've looked up "Sugar Valley Narrows Road", but even Google Maps thinks this is a paved road it seems, but I might have gotten the wrong road:
I've had similar suggestions regarding the thumbs up / thumbs down, but more for marking a nice spot with a nice view, not so much for marking nice or not-nice stretches. I like the idea, but it's a lot of work to implement. Add to that, that this doesn't address the root cause of the problem (bad map data) I prefer to wait until Scenic 3 comes out (or at least until I know how the new map provider classifies these roads).
