First ride experience

Hi,

today I made the first trip (330Km) using Scenic and I‘m very happy, that nearly everything worked fine for me. I will definitively stick to it and share my ideas. The speed limit alarms are a great feature to save the drivers license.

These are the topics I recognized. I‘m sorry for mixing up issues and feature requests.

  • If I choose to recalculate, how can I decide, if the next via or stop should be deleted? An automatic zoom out to see the next via or stop would help to decide this very fast without stopping the bike.
  • Sometimes there is a crazy routing inside the city, where it would be better to stay on the main road. I tried to fix that before starting the trip, but it seems that I missed some of these routing issues. As far as I already red in the forum, it would be the best to use efficient as routing algorithm. This removed some of these issues, but not all of them.
  • My headset seems to be too slow. I’m using a BT Next headset. I only hear „...hundert Metern...“, but I never know how many hundred meters. The beep is already switched on. Is there a possibility to get rid of this behavior? Output is configured as Gerätestandard and I didn‘t play any music during my ride.
  • It would be great, if you could switch the infos in the bottom of the display from current view to a view regarding the next stop just by sliding to the side.  Sometimes this is of more interest than the time to finish.
  • There is one topic, that hasn‘t anything todo with Scenic, but maybe someone has an idea. If I get a call during my ride, my phone (iPhone XS) switches to the telephone view as it should do in this situation. Until then I have to finish the call or try to swipe the phone app away and touch Scenic again. Second is not the best to do during riding the bike. Is there another solution, maybe an automatism, that switches back without doing anything by me?

Best regards,

Tobias

Thanks for the extensive feedback Tobias. I really appreciate you taking the time for this.
Here are my reactions:

OK. Have added this to the feature request list

I'm looking into another map and routing provider now, which I think will make this a lot better. Will be for next motorcycle season though.

My headset seems to be too slow. I’m using a BT Next headset. I only hear „...hundert Metern...“, but I never know how many hundred meters. The beep is already switched on. I think this might be a bug (or feature) of your headset. Some headsets, if they don't get a sound for a while, go into 'sleep' mode. To get out of sleep mode takes a while. Maybe this is configurable for your headset (check the manual). I could add a configuration to add an additional pause between the attention tone and the actual instruction, but that would delay the instruction, possibly even too late. I would be fixing something that is actually not a Scenic bug. It would be a workaround. I'm sure you have the same problem with other navigation apps and this headset, correct? If not, please let me know. perhaps I'm missing something.
Another workaround option would be is to play a sound every x minutes (x depending on what the 'sleep' timeout is for your headset) to keep the headset from going into sleep mode. I'm actually thinking about an audio stats feature, playing some nice tracking stats like "you've covered 54 km, average speed x km/h, max speed y km/h, time: 34min", that would be handy for that. Until that time, you can force to play a sound by tapping the top bar during navigation. That will repeat the last instruction.

It would be great, if you could switch the infos in the bottom of the display from current view to a view regarding the next stop just by sliding to the side.  Sometimes this is of more interest than the time to finish.

Yes. This is already on the list. It's a limitation of the routing provider actually. Long story, but the new routing provider Im looking into should also solve this.

Curious about this too. The only way, as developer, I can solve this, is to make Scenic into a phone app too, so that Scenic detects incoming calls and you can answer them from within Scenic. This will prevent the phone app from opening. This is a lot of work though. If there is another solution I'm very interested in that.

Many tanks for your detailed reply.

I‘m not sure, if I already had the same problems with this delay with other navigation apps. Before using Scenic I mostly used MotionX with only looking at the track without any audio. The only app I tried before was Calimoto and I‘m not sure, if I really had this delay issue. During my riding there was nearly one hour, where I had to tap the display, because it got locked automatically every few minutes. This was really annoying. Additionally I had a better feeling investing in Scenic and so the decision was clear. I‘ll try it for a short route again to compare the audio output. I will also try what happens playing Spotify during my ride with Scenic. However, I couldn‘t find anything regarding a sleep mode in my headset manual. Maybe a configurable pause from zero to a few seconds between the beep and the audio would be the easiest fix. If it is zero by default, it wouldn‘t change anything for users without this issue.

The other problem with phone calls has been the same using other apps. I think it‘s the normal behavior, that the phone app stays on top during the call. The only problem is, that the navigation app is still in background, if I swipe away the phone app. It won’t be worth the time to implement the phone functionality into Scenic because of that. Most people won‘t be interested in that, because they mainly use intercom to talk to other riders an phone calls will be not very often or long. In my case I often have to use the phone to talk to other riders because we have different headsets that are not compatible to use intercom and these calls can be long ones.

Hi Tobias,

You don't necessarily have to try with Calimoto. Any navigation app that gives voice instructions every now and then should do. E.g. Google Maps or Waze.

During my riding there was nearly one hour, where I had to tap the display, because it got locked automatically every few minutes. This was really annoying.

This was Calimoto or Scenic? I'm asking because Scenic had a similar problem, but that's many version and a few months ago. Hoping that it did not resurface?

I think it‘s the normal behavior, that the phone app stays on top during the call.

Yes... that's correct. Other apps can not change that (unless by registering as a phone app too with iOS). It's controlled by iOS on operating system level.

Hi Guido,

the locking issue happened using Calimoto. With Scenic I didn’t have such an issue at all.

Now I‘m back from Surfing in the Netherlands and have been able to test the audio with pocket earth. It is also starting too late. For example the output should be „In 180 Metern...“ and I only hear „80 Metern...“. In this App it is not possible to configure anything regarding audio. There is no configurable beep before audio and no selection of the connection type, but I‘m sure it is not connected as phone. So it should be comparable.

Maybe I should always hear music during navigation. In this case I‘ll get the whole message. Otherwise the only solution would be a customizable pause between beep and audio.

Ok. Well, I’m happy to hear it’s not a Scenic only problem, so probably a headset problem. Are there no configuration options for your headset to prevent it from going into sleep mode?

have you tried the ‘force to play a sound by tapping the top bar during navigation‘ thing?  If you do that right after (or even during) the first (incomplete) instruction you should hear the full instruction  by doing that.

Yes, I tried to force to play the sound and it only works, if there is currently somthing else running like Spotify for example. Otherwise it always takes some time to activate and fade in. I don't think that this is a kind of sleep mode.

In the configuration tool I can't find anything to change this. There is only a special compatibility flag named "A2DP disconnection", but setting this doesn't do anything.
