Bug? Cannot switch off beep

Hi there,

I just started using Scenic for vacation and was quite amazed of its functions. But now I have a very annoying problem:

The headset I am using (Midland BT Next) allows listening to iOS sound in the background while maintaining intercom functionality to other devices. This forces me to use the headset profile for speech output.

The problem is: In HFP mode I cannot switch off this very annoying beep before every direction. When I switch it on and off again in the settings panel, sometimes I get the first speech output without the beep, but then, with the next output, it comes back - and makes me crazy. Had to switch off sound completely, but without sound it doesn't really make sense either.

I believe this must be a bug since I spent like hours with this trying every option that I could find (also alternatives in pairing the headset). I am using iPhone 8 with iOS 13.6 and latest Scenic version.

Thanks in advance for any help!

It's not so much a bug as it is a feature, but I will correct for next update. Most headsets / comsets that connect over HFP, take some time to set up the HFP connection, which typically results in the first bit of the audio being cut off. By enabling the beep, the beep gets cut off, but the actual voice instruction is audible from the start. That's why I override the 'beep before instruction' setting when Voice Output is set to HFP, to be always enabled.

In any case, I realise now it's better to not override that behaviour so that the choice is yours, depending on how your headset/comset handles it. So... will be corrected in next update. Thanks for letting me know!

If you're enjoying Scenic and are happy with the support, please leave a nice rating in the App Store. It would mean a lot to me ❤️

Hi Guido,

thank you for replying so quickly. I know that problem with late activation of the headset output - so of course it makes sense to provide the beep option. Anyway, I am looking forward to the next version!

Did you also try to connect your iPhone as phone to your BT next (+ button)? I've the same headset und am doing this to use all the phone funcionality. Connecting iPhone as phone my issue is the other way round. I never hear the beep and the beginning of the navigation voice, because the BT next needs some time to enable the other audio source. I'm also not using HFP, because of the lesser sound quality.

Because I didn't try this connection, I'm interested in your experience. Does your connection also work with A2DP or only with HFP? Is it really a good idea to hear the navigatin voice always in background without switching music, intercom or phonecall off?

Hi Toki75,

thank you for the hint. I tried that indeed. But I am using the Midland BT Next as intercom headset with hot mike as well. So, using the phone mode, the intercom stops on every audio output of the Scenic app. I then have to reconnect the interphone after every speech instruction - that is not practicable as well.

Went out last weekend and had the same "problem of getting crazy" off the beep...
Using a Freedconn headset and a iPhone 8.

So I'm looking forward too to an update 🙂
Thanks in advance Guido!
