Get Ready for Scenic 2! EICMA 2019, Grossglockner, OCLU action camera, Garmin tire pressure gauge and balaclavas
Sep 13, 2019
Autumn is approaching slowly but steadily, nothing we can do about that but to enjoy these last good-weather weekends on our iron horses. Time to enjoy those beautiful autumn colors, which we, unfortunately, don’t have down here in Mexico.
In this week’s Moto Intel Report, I talk about the importance of a good tire pressure system and balaclavas, Tom takes you to Austria to one of the world’s most spectacular rides as well as to Italy where EICMA 2019 will be held soon and our favorite programmer Guido updates you on the big SCENIC 2 update.
Now, without further ado, let’s get rolling…

The Grossglockner high alpine road is perhaps Austria’s most famous (and dramatic) road. Leading through the heart of the ‘Hohe Tauern’ national park, and towards Austria’s highest peak, the 48 km (30 mi) long road includes 36 hairpin curves and connects Bruck in the state of Salzburg with Heiligenblut in Carinthia.
The highest mountain pass on the route, the Hochtor pass, is at an altitude of over 2500 meter (8215ft). Just behind that point lies the Kaiser-Franz-Josef’s Höhe, a popular overlook offering a great view at the Pasterze Glacier. This could also be a good moment to eat some Kaiserschmarrn (a fluffy schredded pancake) and drink a Skiwasser (Austrian lemonade).
Ideal riding conditions can be found in late spring. This incredible video was shot last year on the Grossglockner during that time – have a look
Please keep in mind that due to snow and ice, the road is closed from the end of October till the beginning of May, with ideal riding conditions in late spring.
MOTORCYCLE NEWS A sneak-peek at EICMA 2019
EICMA 2019 in Milan is less than two months away, and while the producers do their best to keep their state-of-the-art technology a secret until the last minute, we’re already taking a peek at some of the finest new toys for next year.
KTM and Ducati are currently racing to become the first company to launch radar-guided cruise control, equipping a radar unit, manufactured by Bosch, which allows the bike to moderate its speed in traffic when the cruise control is applied.
For now, we expect the Ducati Multistrada 1260 GT to remain the most equipped bike (comes standard with panniers, top box, heated grips, electronic suspension and more), and for the KTM 1290 to go on a diet (new frame, subframe and swingarm), and to churn out a few more BHP from its already very powerful 1300cc engine.

OCLU action camera
Apple just launched its new series of iPhones, and while the iPhone 11 isn’t as disruptive as the iPhone 3 was, there’s one thing that sets the latest series of iPhone’s apart: their camera.
Camera’s on smartphones are improving rapidly, and so are the adventure-proof cameras such as the Go-Pro and the OCLU. The latter is a new 4K ‘intuitive action’ camera that can be outfitted with a dozen of different mounts, including bar mounts, suction mounts and adhesive mounts. The waterproof case (50m) that comes with hydrophobic coated flat glass is perhaps the best add-on for the OCLU.
Perhaps the best thing about the camera is its connectivity to smartphones. The OCLU app helps you to view, edit and share content immediately, and toggling between video, loop record, time-lapse, and slow motion videos is easy.
The camera itself comes at a cost of US $300, and the moto bundle comes at an additional cost of $70. Read all about it here
Tire pressure monitoring
Tire pressure is critical for a motorcycle. You don’t need me to tell you that you only have two points of contact with the road. If one of your tires loses grip, you’re left with one wheel and the result is, well, not good usually.
It’s not just those riders who race their motorcycles at the track who need to be concerned with proper tire pressure. Fuel efficiency goes up, highway, street, and even low-speed riding in town is safer and more fun when you have your tires inflated properly for your type of riding.
So how can you keep an eye on your tire pressure if your motorcycle does not have a tire pressure monitoring system? Well, you order one on Amazon and you will get a phone notification when your pressure is not up to par. Ryan F9 even recommended it in this video.
Every rider needs a balaclava and this quick dry half mask comes in 38 colors. Be it to protect your face from the insects and dust, as a liner under your helmet or just to look cool.
After more than a year, over 100,000 lines of code, countless bugs, long nights and quite some delay, I am extremely proud to announce that Scenic 2 is ready! It will be available in the iOS App Store within the next 2 weeks!
Now I know you probably have some questions, so let me try and answer the ones I’ve been asked a lot lately: Will I keep my purchases? > Yes! Scenic 2 is a regular app update through the App Store. All your purchases will remain intact. Will I keep my routes and trips? > Yes! All data will be migrated upon first launch of Scenic 2.
Will it run on my device? > Scenic 2 runs on iOS12 and iOS13. This means it can run on iPhone 5S and newer, iPad mini 2 and newer and iPad 5th Gen & iPad Air and newer.
I have an older device, now what? > The current version of Scenic can’t be updated on devices running iOS11 or below. You’ll simply keep the ‘old’ Scenic version on those devices.
I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank all beta testers. Scenic 2 has become sooooo much better in the last 3 months of testing, and that’s all because of the countless hours and effort the beta testers have put into this. Not only by using the app, but also by providing extensive and detailed feedback and suggestions. I could not have done it without you!
