This is a drive for people who take the long way on purpose. It covers 198 miles from Princeton to lunch at Big Pines Lodge on Caddo Lake, with no schedule worth rushing and a steady trade of highway for back roads the farther east you go. It starts with coffee at Dutch Bros next to the Walmart Sulercenter in Princeton and the Blackland Prairie opening up ahead. The first 95 miles through Greenville, Emory, and Mineola are fast, straight highway past wide farm fields and cattle pasture. This is warm-up time: cruise, talk on the radio, and watch the post oak thicken until the pines take over the horizon. Past Tyler, the drive changes. From Winona through Big Sandy to Gilmer, the roads narrow to two-lane farm routes that roll and bend through tall pine forest, dip into shaded creek bottoms, and cut through red clay banks. The curves come about seven times as often as on the highway, and they link together, so rhythm matters more than speed. East of Gilmer come the 16 tightest miles of the day, where the car and the road finally have a real conversation. Toward Jefferson the curves relax into long sweepers through lake country. Then the land drops to the lowest ground of the drive, pine gives way to bald cypress hung with Spanish moss, and Caddo Lake shows through the trees. It feels like a different state. Park it, stretch, and settle in for lunch on the water. Expect little to no shoulder on the back roads, along with log trucks, farm equipment, deer, and gravel on the edges of corners. The elevation never exceeds about 670 feet, so the corners do the work.
