Via points disappearing during navigation

Hi Guido,

I tried Scenic for the first time about a couple of weeks ago. For the exercise I generated a round route in-app, modified it a little, added a stop about halfway and saved it. Approx. 140km. It worked brilliantly. I was extremely impressed. I also enjoyed the route generated, so much so, that I decided to ride the exact same route again yesterday, this time with my partner as pillion.

All was going well as before until I reached the stop. That was when I noticed Scenic wanted to navigate me home the shortest route down the highway, not the back roads as per route, so basically ignoring the remainder of the via points. I continued as planned as I knew the route now anyway, and Scenic kept trying to divert me back to the highway until I got close to home.

Last night I checked the route in the edit screen and everything was where it should be, showing the correct route and all via points in place. I’m at a loss as to what could have happened. It worked perfectly the first time. I’m just concerned as I’m very meticulous at creating my routes and I have some larger rides I’m planning which I will be relying on Scenic.

What are your thoughts? Did I do something wrong somehow?

Thanks,

Wilko.

Hi Wilko,

I don't think you did anything wrong, but I am not sure what happened either to be honest. Round trips are a bit tricky as they typically contain some roads twice (e.g. typically the street that you live will be used when you leave and when you are returning). Scenic's current routing provider has a quirk, where, if a route contains the same road twice, it doesn't know if you are going or coming back. Sometimes it makes the wrong choice (thinking that you are on your way home while you're actually just getting started), removing the remainder of the route in the process.

For round trips I work around this problem by splitting up the route in two halves. If first only calculates the first half of the route (and draws a line for the 2nd half)... and then, when you reach the stop/via closes tot the halfway point, it starts calculating the 2nd half of the trip.

This mostly works, but if at that halfway point something out of the ordinary happens, like you deviating from the route a little bit initiating a recalculation, unexpected behaviour can occur. I think this might have been what happened in your case, but can't be sure to be honest.

Needless to say this is all very 'clumsy' and somewhat unreliable. For Scenic 3 (next motorcycle season) I am changing to a new routing and map provider that will complete solve this whole problem. Meanwhile, for non-round trips, you should be fine. For round trips this is something to keep in mind. Alternatively you could do the split yourself... making two routes in stead of one (one for going and one for coming back). A route is considered a round trip if the start and destination are less than 300 meters apart.

Sorry for the inconvenience. I hope this at least explains? If not, or if you have other questions please let me know.

Cheers,
Guido

If you're enjoying Scenic and are happy with the support, please leave a nice rating in the App Store. It would mean a lot to me ❤️

Thank you Guido for your reply.

What you’re saying make sense. To be sure I’ll just create my rides with two or more separate routes as you suggest. It won’t bother me, I used to do it that way with my old Garmin.

Cheers.
