Route Length Grows Substantially When Adding a Second Stop

As a new user of Scenic 2, I am often perplexed when creating a Route. I complete the task and am satisfied with the Route which contains a Stop. Later, I decide to add a second Stop that is along the same basic route as the original, e.g. in-line. This results in the length of the Route extending by as much as 75%. Naturally frustrated, I abort the new Stop by clicking Undo.

My workaround has been to add a VIA # in place of a 2nd Stop and then convert that to a Stop. The Route generator seems content with that and produces no additional distance beyond what I would expect.

Obviously I am missing some detail as I cannot imagine this behavior is normal at this late stage of Scenic 2 development.

It sounds like the route is backtracking over itself if you add a stop. In other words, that the order of the stops is not correct. If this happens again, would you mind saving the route with the stop (and excessive length) and sharing the link to that route here (tap on route from your route list, then use 'share' button above the map preview)? Then I can have a detailed look and reproduce it.

I tried it a d made sure that the second Stop was added after the first Stop and on the Route where the direction of travel was directly down-road from the first Stop. The original Rout was like 43 miles. After the second Stop, which was in the line of travel was added the distance grew to over fifty miles!

I tried to Share it. Hopefully you can see it. The original was titled Night Ride while the modified Route with the added Stop had additional dialog in the title before Night Ride.

Sorry... I would need the share link. When you use the share button in the app, a link is created and a panel slides up from the bottom. In that panel you can choose 'copy'. This copies the link onto your clipboard. Then you can paste that link here, or, if you prefer, mail it to me. There is an 'email me' button all the way at the bottom of the support page.

I realize this is quite cumbersome and not so intuitive. In Scenic 3 this will be slightly redesigned making it easier to add stops and vias between already existing stop and vias.

P.S. A remark about this route... The current version of Scenic has difficulty with routes that overlap themselves and crosses itself. When you start navigating this route you might find that parts of the route will 'disappear'. I.e. When you are on a stretch of road that's in the route twice, Scenic might think you are there the second time (while you are actually there the first time), removing the first part of the route up until that second time all together. This behavior is quite random. Sometimes it works just fine, and sometimes it doesn't. This is actually one of the most important reasons why I'm switching to a new map and routing provider in Scenic 3.

That worked perfectly. Indeed we are blessed to have somewhat curvy roads over hilly terrain and it is a most definite possibility that there will be some criss-crossing along the journey.

Looking forward to the new version and I am sure you are as well as it is obvious that you are gearing up for an overall more consistent implementation of your vision.

I also want to take a moment and thank you for all your time and effort to respond to my (and everyone’s) questions on the forum. We all are so fortunate to have Scenic and you and your team working diligently to make our motorcycle riding lives so much better.

on the contrary Guido, I think the idea of adding a via/stop explicitly after an existing one is quite neat and quick. I’ve seen other apps when you can only add at the end, and then have to move things around to place the new via/stop. That’s terrible.
