Planning a trip

I have been using this app for a while to see the routes I have taken.  I have not used it to plan a future trip until today.   I just can't seem to manipulate this ios app easily and have tried importing a google map route that I planned there.   I am wondering if it is just better to follow google maps instead of this app.  Traffic, gas stations, rest stops are all populating on google maps correctly but when it merges with scenic I now have 200 plus points that say there are errors and I have to ignore them or fix them.   Do people use this app successfully to plot out a route or is it easier to just use google maps without this app at all?  Im watching the tutorial now to see if I have a change of opinion.

Hi Jax,

I'm the developer of Scenic, so not totally objective opinion here 🙂

I now have 200 plus points that say there are errors

That's not normal. Would like to take a look a that if you're still up for it. Could you send me the Google URL of this route so I can try it on my end? Normally a route requires no or very few corrections.

A lot of people use Scenic successfully to plan and navigate routes. Some plan directly in Scenic, others in Google Maps on their desktop and then import into Scenic. Yet others on use other planning platforms or get a route sent to them that can be imported into Scenic.  Scenic navigates you ánd you can track the ride at the same time. Also people like that Scenic is the dedicated place for all their motorcycle rides data (routes, rides and locations). Scenic has a database of thousands of Scenic routes shared by locals worldwide. It keeps your riding statistics. Furthermore Scenic has a curvy routing mode, has offline maps (Google maps does too but very cumbersome on iOS) and had different rerouting behaviour than google (tries to keep you on your carefully planned route as much as possible, and not skip parts when you detour).

OK, enough of the marketing talk...
I can fully imagine people don't care about many of the things mentioned above, and just want the core route planning and navigation. In that case I guess Google Maps will do just fine, as long as you are familiar in the area and/or know how to find the nice curvy roads.

Cheers,
Guido

Thank you for the quick response.   I just made it half way through the tutorial and wish I had done that years ago when I first downloaded the app.  I had to use my lucky charms decoder ring but I think I am making progress.  Understanding the terminology was where I was having trouble and not knowing really how to manage the Via Points vers Stop points.  I will post the link to the first attempt and you will laugh, shake your head or throw the device against the wall asking what this guy is doing is crazy... Trust me I get it...   I am finally getting it and understanding the POI's and how to look for them.  That tutorial was great but please update it and promote it.   Watching that video has made the app understandable and encouraging that I can do it.   Thanks again for the quick response.   You have really done a great job with the database and the features.   I just paid the yearly fee again.

Understand what you mean regarding the via points vs stops. This will become a bit easier in Scenic 3: https://scenic.app/knowledge-base/scenic-3-info/

With Scenic 3, the tutorial video will also be updated. Like your suggestion of promoting it a bit more. Let me give that some thought.

IMHO I think Scenic has the easiest route planning interface of all the apps I have tried. Even the google hyperlink import works well but like all imports you have to check the conversion. So I prefer planning in the app for that reason. Just wish I had one of those new MacBooks so I could use the app on a bigger screen.

I borrowed my wife's iPad Pro and loaded Scenic 2 into it. Wow !! That nice big screen made planning very easy. Too large for navigation would look a little ridiculous on a motorbike, but for planning very nice.

Anyone using Scenic on the latest M1 MacBook ?

Too large for navigation

Some people mount their iPads on their bikes: https://scenic.app/forum/topic/ipad-pro-hi-dpi-version/

Also some M1 one users here I believe: https://scenic.app/forum/topic/scenic-on-apple-m1/#postid-1511

I think iPad mini is a good size. Not sure what the benefits are for anything larger for navigation but for planning the bigger the better. Just my opinion no criticism intended. My wife loves her iPad Pro but I still prefer my MacBook with keyboard.

I have a tank magnet bag with a detachable section to put the ipad in it.   I am going to give it a try on my trip this weekend.   Ill let you know and send a pic how it looks.
