New Map Provider

I believe you will be changing map providers for Scenic 3. This would be most welcome as I find the current map slightly difficult to read while riding compared to other navigation apps. I also use OsmAnd app and I tend to utilize it for general navigation as it is a lot more clear to see the roads and other poi around it. Below is a comparison and as you can see there is quite a difference.

Scenic does have some other map styles available even in the current version. If not already seen, have a look at settings > Light Mode Settings and Settings > Dark Mode Settings.

the new map provider will offer a variance of styles too, but different. In the future I might even offer a way to create your own style, but that might take a while.

Yes I tried the “outdoor” variant which is slightly better.

it was just an observation comparing it to another app. When following a route it doesn’t really matter however sometime I just like to have a map in front of me and it’s important for it to be bold and clear.

also is there an option to have the map full screen. I can only get the map full screen when I “start” it recording a route.

i mean to be able to remove what’s circled in the screen shot below

Well, there are a few ways. E.g. if you select a route from your list you go to the route detail screen. In the map view there is a button that expands the map full screen. E.g.2 when you create a route from the routes tab you go to the route editor. It’s not fully full-screen as it has two button toolbars.

I wonder if giving a user an option to choose which maps to use, OSM or TomTom or HERE, has ever been a consideration.

Considered but quickly decided against. Due to the way Scenic works, several map providers is not really feasible for several reasons.
- It’s the backbone of the app, so would basically mean writing the same app 3 times.

- It’s not only the map, but the whole development library that comes with those maps. Although roughly these libraries offer the same functionality, there are differences between them that influence available behaviour a and options. A very obvious one is the routing engine. E.g. Some frameworks might take one road to get from A to B, while the other framework might take a different road.

If Scenic would not offer turn by turn navigation (but simply draw some lines on the map) then switching map providers would be as simple as selecting another layer, but, that’s not the case.

Guido, thanks for quick reply.  I was just curious.  I've been using TomTom maps all my ridding life, so I'm not sure what to expect from OSM.

Hopefully when all map providers switch to NDS, it will be easier to implement.  HERE already offers NDS maps, and TomTom is transitioning to NDS.
