Iphone 11 bad GPS reception while wirelessly charging

Hi, I have iphone 11 ios 14.6 and I am having issues when using wireless charging phone holder on my bike.
Scenic is showing “bad gps reception” notification and recalculating the route all the time.
When I am using only holder without charging and when charging with cable everything is ok. Also when wirelessly charging and using other navigation app Google maps, Osmand, Waze … there is no problem.
Do you have any idea what is wrong?

Regards

Jakub

It’s very likely a hardware issue. Even though other navigation apps don’t have the ‘bad gps’ message. This simply means their threshold to display such a message is higher.

Its a relatively known issue with iPhone 11. Perhaps the wireless charger amplifies the issue. Have a look at this thread: https://scenic.app/forum/topic/iphone-11-gps-issues/

Yeah I have read the other thread but there is no relation with the wireless charging. In my case it is clear. I ride the signal is ok and then I push the button that activates wireless charging and GPS signal is gone. 🙁

I understand. I’m afraid there’s not much else I can do. Scenic receives the same coordinate information from the same GPS receiver as all other navigation apps do.

Scenic displays the ‘bad gps signal’ message, if GPS accuracy is below a certain threshold level. Other navigation apps get the same accuracy signal, it’s just that their threshold for showing a message about it might be different (or they might just continue working with the bad accuracy). I could adjust Scenic to also work with lower accuracy, but that would be ‘covering up’ the real issue (accuracy going down when you switch on wireless charging).

I’ve been using the Quad Lock wireless charger and have had no issues with my iPhone XR and iPhone 12 Pro.

So, it sounds like indeed it’s something to do with your wireless charger for sure. It could be 100% caused by the charger,  but I wouldn’t rule out an issue with the GPS receiver as well. Perhaps that issue is unnoticeable during normal use, but amplified to a noticeable level when the wireless charger is used.

To analyse further you could try (if possible) with another phone and / or another wireless charger. That should be able to tell you if it’s the wireless charger or the phone, or both.

sorry I can’t be of more help

Thank you for a deep explanation. I will try to analyse a problem little bit more and let you know.

Hello,

I can confirm that the GPS threshold is influenced by the Quadlock wireless charger with an iPhone SE 22.

When charging directly through a USB cable GPS (and the routing) work perfectly, 100% of the time.

Good rides

PS.: I had to revert to Google Maps because I had forgotten to take the cable on a short ride near the beach in Sardinia and even  though the phone was charging wirelessly, GM didn't seem to have this issue.

Hang on... R100, are you saying that Scenic doesn't work on your iPhone SE when you use the Quadlock wireless charger?  Is the "iPhone SE 22" what apple calls the 3rd generation one?

I have been using the same charger with a 2nd generation iPhone SE for awhile and I have never had a problem.  I missed this thread somehow; if I had seen it earlier I might not have bought the phone or charger... but it seems to work for me...

Have a look at this thread on advrider: https://www.advrider.com/f/threads/smartphone-wireless-charging-and-navigation-interference.1505751/
In summary... it seems to be a bit random. Sometimes it interferes, sometimes it doesn't.

For what it's worth: I didn't have GPS interference problems when I was still using the QL wireless charger with my iPhone 12 Pro.

A bit of a side note and not related to this topic here, but in the end, I removed the wireless charger because of the phone overheating issue. The wireless charger generates more heat while charging, in combination with GPS app running and full sun exposure (I live in Mexico) this sometimes caused my iPhone to go in 'overheating' mode, rendering is useless until it cooled down.

yes. When connectes via a USb cable -->> no GPS signal loss. Ever.

Seems to be a random type of issue.. as Guido mentions. No big deal.
