Efficient to Curvy

Hello I am new to this app and forum, but noticed a significant challenge when generating a curvy route.  I am hoping you will assist for workaround or answer.  The challenge for this application is that I enjoy the 'Curvy' feature of this application, but I live in a very busy metropolitan area (Washington DC) and I want to split the route from efficient (Leaving DC) to curvy once out of the area.  The same would be true for returning (efficient when nearing DC).   It appears that once 'Curvy' is selected, the route application is permanently set to curvy routing, and including any additional modifications to the saved route.  Maybe there is already an easy fix that I am not aware of, but if I want this application to be part of my entire motorcycle ride, then I would need to create 3 separate routes for a single day trip. One route to leave city efficiently, another route for 'Curvy' destination, and last an efficient route once near my city for return to home.  Or only use Scenic for the Curvy route and use my iPhone Apple Maps for both the exiting city and returning.  I watched the Instruction Video for this application and did not see this challenge addressed.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Hi there. Understand the question  it’s not so straight forward but it’s possible  here’s the steps:

  • create the route in the routes tab through the ‘create Route’ button.
  • Set the route start and end flag point where you actually want to start and end the curvy bit.
  • Add your via points as needed.
  • Generate the curvy route.
  • save the route
    Now:
  • select the route for navigation
  • In start screen, once route selected: set ‘guidance to route’ to ‘route start’
  • hit start. (Route will be fast/efficient/short to route start and from then follow route as designed)

Once you reach end of the route, the navigation will stop but track recording will continue. If you don’t know the way back home from that point, double tap the map and add your home address. It will guide you home as efficient, short or fast as possible.

Hope this helps/explains. If not or if you have other questions please let me know. Happy to help.

Best regards and ride safe,

Guido

I had tried this earlier, as I too thought that would fix the issue, but it does not. Instead, it routes straight north through downtown DC traffic, which would add an hour to my time (heading to the start point).  It is not using the efficient route method, although the text says efficient on device without option to change, (All highways are being avoided, and I suppose this is because I chose to avoid highways for 'Curvy' Options.  Bottom line it is not working as expected.  If I choose to create a new efficient route with same start point (not Curvy Generated), then it routes 'Efficiently' using the Interstate Highways.

Thanks again!

It’s not a solution indeed. More of a workaround. In essence Scenic does not support multiple routing modes in 1 route. It will use the same mode flit get to the start (incl avoidances) so because you turned that off for curvy generation it will also avoid this to ge Tro start.

mas for getting to destination... yes. Separate route. I explained in my previous comment.

Okay, thanks for replying and clarifying the limitations of this application.  Does this issue (Supporting multiple routing modes) merit wishlist features, which is the basis of this thread?

I argue that this could be a very powerful feature and selling point to have a curvy route start and end markers on the map or ability to touch screen and circle areas of the route for 'Curvy' feature.  Honestly, this was my primary reason for purchasing this application ($79).  Now that it does not work as I expected (a single route created on a single app for one trip which could be a week, days or a single day) it has lost much value already.  Sadly, I must now consider different options for my future rides.

Thanks again for your immediate responses!

I understand the disappointment. Unfortunately this is not totally depending on me. Scenic uses a 3rd party route provider which does not support multiple routing modes in one route.

This does not mean you can not create the route you want. You can create the route you want by generating curvy routes through the routes tab (‘create route’ button) and then add/delete/move the via points to get exactly the route you want.

I do NOT recommend to make multi day routes, as this can cause performance problems and even app crashes (route needs to be calculated as a whole, also when you deviate from the route). In stead I recommend to create one route per day... from hotel to hotel or camp site to camp site for example. And then store all the routes of one trip in the same group.

Hope this explains a bit more.

all the best,

guido

Again, Thank you for your interest and quick response.  Although, the application has limitations, which if resolved could really make it a powerhouse, I tested an approach that appears to be workaround.   As with most busy people, we do not want to spend more time on an application than reasonable, which is suppose to make planning a ride easier.

Workaround Approach:

  • I generated 'Curvy' route with Start and finish points only in an area on the map where I want the 'Curvy' feature, avoiding highways and more, then exported the GPX file to iCloud.
  • Next, imported the same iCloud GPX file route into the Scenic App utilizing Garmin format option.
  • Last, I changed my Start/Finish points to my home and since the 'Curvy' options were no longer associated to the route, the efficient route worked perfectly utilizing Interstates and highways.
  • This process adds a little extra time to the route build/creation, but now the entire route is on the scenic app as one route on one device.

Regards

The approach is good, but it can be done faster. The export - import is not necessary. After the curvy route is generated you can add a new start point. (The old start will become via 1 and directions from start to via 1 will be according to the mode and avoidances set under the ‘routing’ button). In fact the entire route will be calculated with these settings, but because of the many via points the curvy generation adds, there will probably not be any difference (check to be sure and add a via point if necessary). Routing modes and avoidances do not have much effect if there are many via points. Also one of the reasons to keep the route to one route per day (otherwise the distance between the via points will become too long)

This is what  I intended to explain in my previous post, but obviously did not do a very good job. Sorry about that.

I deal with this problem frequently and I use different tools for different tasks. I don't try to hammer in nails with a screwdriver or drill holes with a leaf blower.

To get in and out of the city I want a traffic-aware, efficiency oriented app such as Google Maps or Waze.  Once I'm outside the city, my Scenic app carves a curvy path between the cities.  Further, since Scenic is not traffic-aware, it's the LAST app I'm going to use if I'm in a hurry.

Neither app does the other's task very well, and there's really no need as long as you have both.  (Do you eat your meals with a spork instead of a spoon and fork?)

Enjoy your wind therapy!
