Dynamic Navigation Screen

Hi Guido

With all the navigation apps I have tried including dedicated devices ( Garmin and TomTom ) they all more or less have the same navigation screen. Map, track, speed limits, speed, distance to go to destination, ETA and at the top next turn and distance. All of this is good stuff until you get close to the crucial turn. What I think would make Scenic unique is if as you approach this critical point a pop up window fills the screen with Turn Symbol, Road Name and Countdown distance to turn. Big and very clear information. This would make navigating without voice directions a doodle. After all at the point of turn what is important to make the correct turn, direction, name of road (road sign) and distance to turn. A dynamic interface. Maybe this would require too much computational overhead but would be unique.

Consider this. Map shows a turn in 20 miles. How many times do you look at the screen until you get to the turn ? As you get closer you check more often. Each time you check, your eyes are on distance to go to turn and not on the road. However with a pop up screen giving you the warning of turn, this is so much easier to see. No need to read screen just wait for pop up with big clear easy to read information. Screen changing is something you would notice using peripheral vision very different from reading a number on a complicated screen.

Just a thought.

OK. Understand what you mean. But I argue that seeing the map as well is very important.

For example, when I ride on Mexico City, (very) complex junctions are more rule then exception. E.g. with an overpass, 3 exits in a row just 50 meters apart, no road signs, and 5 other streets joining at that same junction. In those scenarios I have learned to disregard all the turn instructions (visual and audible) and just watch the map with the route, and ‘map’ the actual situation in front of me to that map. That way I know that it’s not the first exit I need to take, but the 2nd and then immediately keep in the left lane to stay on route (as an example).

Of course these junctions are only typical for big cities, places which we motorcyclist rather avoid, but I find myself looking only at the map most of the time now. For me personally, a simple attention tone that a turn is coming up would be enough so that I know when to look at the map

I guess my point is that everyone has the learned their own way and preference that works for them.

Having said that, I think this could be combined. How about when approaching a turn, the turn instructions expand in size, covering half the screen, covering half the screen and then the lower half is still the map?

If you're enjoying Scenic and are happy with the support, please leave a nice rating in the App Store. It would mean a lot to me ❤️

Guido I totally get what you mean by reading the map to help make the correct turn. Split view would work. Alternatively enlarge map approaching  junction and overlay direction arrow on map. Display road name / number at the top with a horizontal distance countdown bar underneath all in a pop up window. Would that work ?

I don’t know about the overlay. Might not work visually. I will try a few things while I’m working on this for Scenic 3.
